About Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1991 - 2000)

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) was a science award in India given annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in six categories. It was the highest, most prestigious and coveted prize given in the area of multidisciplinary science in India.

The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) India, the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and is known as the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology’. The Prize is given each year for outstanding contributions to science and technology.

History of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1991 - 2000)

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize's monetary component changed considerably over its history: an initial award of two lakh rupees was raised to five lakh rupees in 2008, alongside a lifetime monthly research fellowship for recipients. In 2024, the award was restructured under India's Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar framework and its cash component was removed entirely, a change meant to elevate the honour's prestige toward that of the Padma awards rather than diminish it. Despite this shift in form, the prize still recognises the same seven scientific disciplines it has covered since 1958.
