About Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2011 - 2020)

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) was a science award in India given annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in six categories. It was the highest, most prestigious and coveted prize given in the area of multidisciplinary science in India.

The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) India, the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and is known as the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology’. The Prize is given each year for outstanding contributions to science and technology.

History of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2011 - 2020)

Each year's Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize laureates are announced on September 26th, the anniversary of CSIR's founding, a date the organisation marks as its Foundation Day. The announcement has long served as the centrepiece of that day's observances, drawing attention across India's research institutions to the newly named winners in each of the prize's seven fields. Since a 2024 restructuring folded the honour into the government's broader Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar framework, presentation ceremonies have moved to Rashtrapati Bhavan, with awards now conferred directly by the President of India.
