About Padma Vibhushan Award Winners in Medicine

The Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "exceptional and distinguished service". All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards.

History of Padma Vibhushan Award Winners in Medicine

Since 1954, India's second-highest civilian honor has recognized outstanding medical figures, including cardiologist S. I. Padmavati (1992), India's first woman cardiologist; oncologist V. Shanta (2016) of Chennai's Adyar Cancer Institute; interventional cardiologist Purshotam Lal (2009), a pioneer of coronary angioplasty; pediatrician Dilip Mahalanabis (2023), who developed oral rehydration therapy; physiologist Autar Singh Paintal (1986); and cardiac surgeon M. S. Valiathan (2005), honored for advancing cardiovascular medicine and public health across India.
