About Padma Vibhushan Award Winners in Trade & Industry

The Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "exceptional and distinguished service". All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards.

History of Padma Vibhushan Award Winners in Trade & Industry

India's Padma Vibhushan has honored many of the country's leading business figures under Trade & Industry. J.R.D. Tata, chairman of Tata Group, received it in 1955, and G.D. Birla of the Birla Group followed in 1957. Later laureates include Ratan Tata (Tata Group, 2008), N.R. Narayana Murthy (Infosys co-founder, 2008), steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal (ArcelorMittal, 2008), and Wipro chairman Azim Premji (2011). Reliance Industries founder Dhirubhai Ambani was honored posthumously in 2016, and Larsen & Toubro's Anil Manibhai Naik received it in 2019.
