Administered by CSIR's Human Resource Development Group, it covers organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry conducted within India. Recipients must be citizens under forty-five at selection. First conferred in 1958 and named for CSIR's founding director Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, it is announced annually on September 26th, CSIR's Foundation Day, alongside the prize's other six disciplines.
