About Padma Bhushan Award 1954

As the inaugural year of the Padma Bhushan, 1954 honored 23 recipients, the largest early cohort, headlined by nuclear physicist Homi J. Bhabha, chemist and CSIR founder Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, Carnatic vocalist M. S. Subbulakshmi, and painter Jamini Roy. Poet Maithili Sharan Gupt and Malayalam poet Vallathol Narayana Menon represented literature. Science, civil service and literature dominated this founding list, establishing the award's early character before subsequent years narrowed sharply to cohorts of 10 to 16 recipients through the rest of the decade.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
