India named 19 Padma Bhushan recipients in 2025, spanning cinema, sports, and public life. Notable honorees included hockey goalkeeper P. R. Sreejesh, actors Ajith Kumar, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Shobana and Anant Nag, and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. Silicon Valley chip pioneer Vinod Dham, "father of the Pentium," was honored as an overseas Indian. Unusually, four awards were posthumous: ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, economist Bibek Debroy, former Maharashtra CM Manohar Joshi, and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, all of whom died in 2024.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
