About Padma Bhushan Award 1958

1958 brought 16 recipients, highlighted by ornithologist Salim Ali, later called the "Birdman of India," and sarod legend Allauddin Khan, guru to Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan. Other notable honorees included cardiologist Rustom Jal Vakil, geologist Darashaw Wadia, and Kannada writer Kuppali Venkatappagowda Puttappa (Kuvempu). The year balanced science, medicine, and classical arts prominently, with fewer civil-service honorees than in 1954, reflecting a broadening of recognition beyond bureaucratic achievement toward cultural and scientific eminence.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
