Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan, both towering Hindustani classical musicians, were among 1967's 24 Padma Bhushan honorees. Marathon swimmer Mihir Sen, famed for crossing seven seas including the English Channel, and tennis star Ramanathan Krishnan represented sport. Novelist Mulk Raj Anand and cultural activist Pupul Jayakar featured in literature and social work. The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri.
