Playback singing legend Lata Mangeshkar was among 1969's 29 Padma Bhushan awardees, alongside actor Prithviraj Kapoor, patriarch of the Kapoor film dynasty, and industrialist Kasturbhai Lalbhai. Two overseas Indians were honored: Raja Rao and Gobind Behari Lal, both based in the United States, the latter a Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist. Carnatic vocalist Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and filmmaker S. S. Vasan also featured. The list notably reached beyond India's borders to recognize members of the diaspora for literary and journalistic achievement.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
