Bollywood icon Raj Kapoor and celebrated cartoonist R. K. Laxman headlined 1971's 41 Padma Bhushan recipients. Classical music was richly represented, with Hindustani vocalists Amir Khan and Gangubai Hangal and Carnatic singer D. K. Pattammal all honored. Rocket scientist Satish Dhawan and physician Vulimiri Ramalingaswami represented science and medicine. Industrialists such as B. D. Garware also featured. This eclectic, arts-heavy list stood in contrast to 1972's defense-dominated roster the following year, spanning cinema, music, science, and trade across a broad 41-name list.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
