The year 1972 saw a bumper list of 50 Padma Bhushan awardees, the largest of this span, reflecting the aftermath of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. General Jagjit Singh Aurora, who accepted Pakistan's surrender at Dhaka, headed the honorees, alongside fellow military and police officers like Inderjit Singh Gill and Ashwini Kumar. Agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan, banker T. A. Pai, and physician Bhalchandra Purandare were also honored. Civil servants and defense figures dominated, unlike literature-heavy years before and after.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
