With only 17 awardees, 1973 produced one of the smallest Padma Bhushan lists of the decade. Notable honorees included painter M. F. Husain, cricket legend Vinoo Mankad, nuclear physicist Raja Ramanna, poet-actor Harindranath Chattopadhyay, and journalist Pothan Joseph, who received the honor posthumously. Also recognized were Carnatic musician C. Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar and industrialist M. A. Muthiah Chettiar. The compact list spanned science, sport, cinema, and journalism, marking a notably quieter year for civilian honors compared to the 50 conferred just one year earlier in 1972.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
