Fifteen Padma Bhushan awards were conferred in 1975, most notably including a posthumous honor for ghazal singer Begum Akhtar, who died in 1974. Chemist Asima Chatterjee, a pioneering woman scientist, and nuclear physicist P. K. Iyengar were recognized for science, while civil servant R. C. V. P. Noronha and historian V. V. Mirashi represented administration and literature. With one posthumous award and no foreign recipients, 1975 is distinguished by honoring Begum Akhtar after her death, a rare instance that decade.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
