Sixteen Padma Bhushan awards were given in 1976. Business tycoon Naoroji Godrej represented trade and industry, while poet-lyricist Harivansh Rai Bachchan, father of actor Amitabh Bachchan, was honored for literature. Physicist Yash Pal and space scientist U. R. Rao represented emerging fields in Indian science, and cardiologist K. S. Sanjivi represented medicine. Hindustani vocalist Mallikarjun Mansur also featured among the honorees. With no foreign or posthumous recipients, 1976 balanced established literary figures against a new generation of scientists shaping India's programs.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
