About Padma Bhushan Award 1998
The Padma Bhushan resumed in 1998 after a five-year suspension caused by litigation over the award's constitutionality, honoring 18 people. Writer Bhisham Sahni, author of "Tamas," and Malayala Manorama editor K. M. Mathew were recognized for literature, alongside Kuchipudi guru Vempati Chinna Satyam for art. Jurist and diplomat L. M. Singhvi and veteran freedom-movement figure Satyapal Dang were honored for public affairs. Several cardiac and transplant surgeons were also included, reflecting a strong medical-science presence in this comeback year's list.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
