About Padma Bhushan Award 2004

Only 19 people received the Padma Bhushan in 2004, the smallest class of the decade. Poet-lyricist Gulzar and veteran Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee, known for his work with Satyajit Ray, led the arts. Bharatanatyam dancer Alarmel Valli was also honored. The year's most unusual recipient was former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, honored in public affairs, a rare instance of a foreign head-of-government-level figure receiving the award. Scientist Govindarajan Padmanaban represented biochemistry among a notably compact list.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
