A large cohort of 37 recipients marked 2006, one of the biggest of the decade. Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi and veteran actor A. K. Hangal represented cinema, while Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and HDFC's Deepak Parekh covered trade and industry. Artist K. G. Subramanyan and ecologist Madhav Gadgil were notable science and arts honorees. Foreign recipients included German industrialist Gunter Kruger, Czech Indologist Dusan Zbavitel, and Russian historian Grigory Bongard-Levin, giving the year a distinctly international scholarly flavor alongside its film and business names.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
