About Padma Bhushan Award 2007

Thirty-two people received the Padma Bhushan in 2007. Lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar and painters Syed Haider Raza and Tyeb Mehta led the arts. Telecom magnate Sunil Mittal represented industry. The year drew an exceptionally global roster of foreign honorees: PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, economist Jeffrey Sachs, Suzuki chairman Osamu Suzuki of Japan, neuroscientist Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, and political theorist Bhikhu Parekh, underscoring the growing recognition of overseas Indians and international figures with India ties during this award cycle.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
