The 2011 Padma Bhushan honored 31 individuals. Playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, actors Shashi Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman, and painter Krishen Khanna led the arts category. ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar represented trade and industry, one of few women recognized in business that year. Three recipients were honored posthumously: physician Keki Byramjee Grant, designer Dashrath Patel, and Ayurveda practitioner Raghavan Thirumulpad. Composer Khayyam and social worker Rajashree Birla rounded out a list dominated by cultural and cinema figures rather than science or civil service.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
