India's 2015 Padma Bhushan list was the largest of this period with 20 recipients, and unusually foreign-heavy: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Melinda Gates were jointly honored for philanthropy, US-based mathematician Manjul Bhargava (a Fields Medalist) for science, and Japanese scholar Saichiro Misumi for public affairs. Domestic honorees included cardiologists Ashok Seth and Ambrish Mithal, senior advocate Harish Salve, journalist-broadcaster Rajat Sharma, filmmaker Jahnu Barua, and supercomputing pioneer Vijay Bhatkar, reflecting the awards' broad international and scientific scope.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
