Fourteen people received the Padma Bhushan in 2019, including Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and rocket scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was earlier wrongly implicated in the 1994 ISRO espionage case. Veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar was honored posthumously. Foreign recipients included Cisco chairman John T. Chambers and South African finance minister Pravin Gordhan. Everest mountaineer Bachendri Pal and MDH Masala founder Mahashay Dharampal Gulati also featured, giving the list a strong mix of business, science, sport and diplomacy.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
