The 2020 Padma Bhushan list held 16 recipients, headlined by Pritzker Prize-winning architect B. V. Doshi, industrialist Anand Mahindra, and Olympic badminton medalist P. V. Sindhu. Former Goa chief minister and defence minister Manohar Parrikar received the honor posthumously, as did Bangladeshi diplomat Syed Muazzem Ali, an unusual foreign-posthumous inclusion. Other honorees spanned social work, with environmentalist Anil Prakash Joshi, and academia, with US-based marketing scholar Jagdish Sheth honored as an overseas Indian recipient alongside spiritual teacher Sri M.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
