About Padma Bhushan Award 2021

With just 10 recipients, 2021 had an unusually small and politically weighted Padma Bhushan list, four of whom were posthumous: former Bihar minister Ram Vilas Paswan, ex-Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, former Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel, and Islamic scholar Kalbe Sadiq. Living honorees included Carnatic-Bollywood playback singer K. S. Chithra, Kannada litterateur Chandrashekhara Kambara, former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, ex-bureaucrat Nripendra Misra, industrialist Rajnikant Shroff, and Rajya Sabha member Tarlochan Singh.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
