India conferred 17 Padma Bhushan honors in 2022 across 16 awards, including one joint award to vaccine scientists Krishna and Suchitra Ella. Strikingly, three Indian-origin American tech/culinary leaders featured: Google's Sundar Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, and chef-author Madhur Jaffrey, all honored as overseas recipients. Other notable winners included Congress politician Ghulam Nabi Azad, Serum Institute chief Cyrus Poonawalla, classical vocalist Rashid Khan, and Paralympic javelin champion Devendra Jhajharia. Plant scientist Sanjaya Rajaram, based in Mexico, was honored posthumously.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
