About Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025

The National Science Awards 2025, the country's highest honor recognizing the outstanding and inspiring contributions made by scientists, technologists, and innovators across diverse fields of science, technology, and technology-led innovation were announced today.

These awards are conferred across 13 categories: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Science, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology and Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology, and other allied fields. The awards reaffirm India's commitment to fostering scientific excellence and technological leadership for national development.

Nominations for the National Science Awards 2025 were invited between October 4 and November 17, 2024, via the dedicated portal (https://awards.gov.in/). The nominations underwent rigorous scrutiny by a panel of eminent scientific leaders including the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the Chairperson of the National Science Awards Committee, Secretaries of science departments, heads of academies, and domain experts coordinated by the National Science Awards Secretariat.

Vigyan Ratna Award: Padma Vibhushan Late Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was a renowned Indian astrophysicist and cosmologist known for his ground-breaking work in cosmology and developed the Hoyle–Narlikar theory to unify gravitation and matter creation, providing a framework for a steady-state universe in the 1960s. Prof. Narlikar with Fred Hoyle and Geoffrey Burbidge, proposed the Quasi-Steady State Cosmology model that helps in explaining cosmic background radiation and galaxy formation in a different way. As the founder director of the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, he helped establishing a world-class research and education hub in India.
