About Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1971 - 1980)

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) was a science award in India given annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in six categories. It was the highest, most prestigious and coveted prize given in the area of multidisciplinary science in India.

The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) India, the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and is known as the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology’. The Prize is given each year for outstanding contributions to science and technology.

History of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1971 - 1980)

Eligibility for the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize is deliberately narrow: candidates must be Indian citizens, no older than forty-five in the award year, and must have carried out the honoured research within India during the five years immediately preceding nomination. This combination of an age ceiling and a domestic-research requirement spotlights scientists still in the earlier, formative stretch of their careers rather than offering lifetime-achievement recognition. The rule has remained largely unchanged since the prize's founding in 1958, even as the award itself has since been restructured and renamed.
