Fifteen Padma Bhushan awards were given in 1982, with American art historian Stella Kramrisch, a leading scholar of Indian temple art, as the sole foreign honoree. Naga political leader and freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu received recognition for social work, while oncologist Kamal Ranadive, a pioneer of Indian cancer research, and musicologist S. Balachander were also honored. Museum administrator Grace McCann Morley, another Western-born figure long based in India, rounded out a list weighted heavily toward medicine and cultural scholarship this year.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
