India honored 24 Padma Bhushan recipients in 2014. Actor Kamal Haasan and lyricist Vairamuthu represented Tamil cinema, while badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and tennis star Leander Paes brought sporting distinction. Science was heavily represented, including ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan and biochemist Padmanabhan Balaram. Writers Ruskin Bond and Anita Desai received literary honors. Notably, American academic couple Lloyd and Susanne Hoeber Rudolph were jointly honored as foreign recipients, alongside Bangladeshi scholar Anisuzzaman, and nuclear scientist Anumolu Ramakrishna was recognized posthumously.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
