About Padma Bhushan Award 2018

The 2018 list had just nine Padma Bhushan honorees, one of the smallest cohorts. Cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the most famous recipient, alongside billiards/snooker champion Pankaj Advani and Bihar folk singer Sharda Sinha. Russia's ambassador to India, Alexander Kadakin, received the award as a rare foreign-and-posthumous honoree, having died in office weeks after selection. Christian bishop Philipose Mar Chrysostom, epigraphist Ramachandran Nagaswamy, and Goan painter Laxman Pai rounded out a list weighted toward sport and culture.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
